Fifty-plus years ago, Ralph McInerny’s The Logic of Analogy characterized Francis Silvestri of Ferrara’s doctrine of analogy as a confusing hybrid of the thought of Thomas Aquinas and of Thomas Cajetan. Since then, scholarship on fifteenth-century Thomism has flourished, thanks especially to the efforts of Ashworth, Bonino, Hochschild, Riva, and Tavuzzi. In light of these decades of scholarship, in this article I reconsider Francis Silvestri’s doctrine of analogy. I attempt to show the merits of his contribution to the Thomist tradition’s ongoing reflection on analogy, especially the dispute among Thomists and with Scotists over abstracting an analogous concept, the unity of the concept used analogously, and the use of analogy in demonstration. I argue that Francis’s hybrid succeeds in finding a place for analogy of attribution in names said analogously of God and creatures while still meeting Cajetan’s standards for answering Scotist objections to demonstration through analogous terms.

Reasoner’s Now Shown Mercy is the first commentary in 500 years that returns to the quadriga (literal sense plus threefold spiritual sense) in its exegetical approach. The commentary shows how Paul understands Israel to be valued by God for its own sake, not simply as a type of the church or a preparation for the Christ. Paul views Israel as under God’s mercy even as he writes Romans chapters 9–11, grieving as he is over both Israel’s political subjugation in the first century and its spiritual condition. Since these chapters show that God values Israel for its own sake, the commentary’s exegesis calls gentile believers to heed anew Paul’s warning against boasting over Israel.

Pastoral Care to and Ministry with LGBTQ Youth and Young Adults weaves sound theology and solid practice to offer insight and introspection about helping and ministering to some of our most vulnerable in our congregations and/or parishes--LGBTQ youth and young adults. Moreover, the book provides pragmatic pastoral strategies that can be successfully implemented into Christian youth ministries and young adult ministries. The book examines traditional understandings of homosexuality and transgender in Scripture from a marginalized perspective. The book analyzes current theological and pastoral practice and "moves the needle" to offer new insights and fresh ideas regarding pastoral care to and ministry with LGBTQ young people. This book is perfect for youth/young adult ministers, lay leaders, pastors, parents, and academics who are interested in LGBTQ issues, topics, and ministry. The book invites students, scholars, and practitioners to understand the subtleties and nuances of providing pastoral care and ministry to God's queer young people. For anyone serious about LGBTQ young people, this book is a must!

Philanthropia as Skopos of the Incarnation: The Deifying Vocation of Humanity in Maximus the Confessor

Maximus the Confessor’s belief that the Incarnation would have happened without a Fall is a key facet of his thought, yet contradicts portions of his corpus which state that God became human due to sin. I assert that Maximus affirms a prelapsarian motive of the Incarnation for two reasons: his conception of deification as participation and understanding of humanity’s original vocation. Deification and vocation are presented by Maximus in such a way that they could have only been fulfilled through Christ’s Incarnation; the joining of human and divine natures is not a soteriological necessity. Analysing accounts of the Fall of Adam in both the Questiones ad Thalassium and the Ambiguum demonstrate that the Confessor reconciles the historic need for salvation with the will of God from all eternity. I argue that a reading of Ambigua 41 in the context of the Maximian corpus reveals an all- encompassing reason for the Incarnation. Philanthropy (φιλανθρωπία), God’s love for humanity, is the motive (σκοπός) for the Incarnation that embraces the divine preexistent intention without contradicting soteriology.

Beschreibung:
This article presents seven points of focused dissonance between Jeremiah and Romans, by identifying how Romans 9–11 inverts the judgment language of Jeremiah 1–20 against Judah. Without claiming that the inversions in Romans 9–11 are intentional, the article argues that the inversions of this section of Jeremiah are similar to the inversions that Deutero-Isaiah performs on this same section of Jeremiah, identified by B. Sommer. The inversions of Jeremiah that occur in Romans 9–11 highlight these chapters' positive stance toward corporeal, ethnic Israel, and provide another argument against interpreting 'all Israel' in Rom 11,26 as the church.

The article demonstrates a need and placement of Roman Catholic pastoral theology and serves to offer important revelations about the state of pastoral theology in the Catholic tradition. The overarching goal of this article is to address several components of Catholic pastoral theology: its distinctive nature, the many theological and ministerial areas within its discipline, its scope and purpose, its themes and issues, its prospective future, and finally, reflections on my experience as an adolescent ministry scholar. The article attempts to deepen the conversation of Catholic pastoral theology and to highlight some of its strengths and growing edges.
