The vision of Marian University is to provide an education that profoundly transforms lives, society, and the world. In the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), we execute this by providing our students with personalized faculty attention and opportunities to conduct rigorous project and laboratory based activities. It is our goal that our students graduate ready to successfully enter their careers or graduate studies. We believe the URS contributes to our students' successes with the following objectives:

Celebrate student achievement in research

Create a platform for dissemination of knowledge

Foster a sense of community across all divisions of CAS

Improve student communication with a diverse audience

Analyzing the Efficacy of Natural Baby Soaps for the Elimination of Bacterial Colonization on Bath Toys
Créateur:
Benitez, Jacqueline, Nicpon, Mira, McLaughlin, Katelyn, and Rost, Abigail
La description:
Recent studies have discovered that water-retaining bath toys harbor a high amount of potential pathogens due to available nutrients in baby soaps. Unfortunately , these bath toys can be a source for infection or disease for the children playing with them. In order to investigate the efficacy of baby soaps on the elimination of bacteria on bath toys, rubber ducks were coated with E. coli and then were washed with an organic or non-organic baby soap. It was hypothesized that organic soap would be more efficient at eliminating bacteria due to its antibacterial properties. Through this experiment, it was found that organic baby soaps have a higher possibly of eliminating the bacteria.

The Antibiotic Effects of Basil on E. Coli and S. Aureus

La description:
Many spices hold natural qualities that help provide immunity against certain infections. In this experiment, our investigation group wants to address the antibiotic support of basil on various infections such as S. aureus and E. coli. Basil's aerial parts contain antimicrobial properties that our group will test on Agar disks for S. aureus and E. coli. When we add basil to the infection on Agar, we will see diminished growth as the basil has helped kill off some of the microbes

Antibiotic Resistance Coming Soon to A Pathogen Near You

La description:
The phenomena of antibiotic resistant bacteria has increased worldwide and can frequently be found on everyday surfaces. Here, we characterize a bacterial isolate from a woman’s restroom door handle at Marian. Preliminary results comprised of morphological and biochemical tests, including growth characteristics on blood agar medium, as well as usage of the Kirby Bauer agar diffusion test to determine antibiotic susceptibility, identifies this isolate to be a multidrug resistant Neisseria species. However, additional detailed analysis is needed to confirm its identity.

Ginger is a commonly used spice in foods and drinks worldwide and has also been known to be a natural disease-preventative since ancient times. Using ginger has been shown in previous studies to prevent microbial growth (Rahmani et al., 2014). The recent encouragement for the use of natural cleaning products has influenced this research project to test if ginger can be used as an effective cleaning agent. Natural cleaning products allow for a healthier environment by reducing chemical use. If ginger has antimicrobial properties, then we expect it will be an effective antimicrobial agent against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus).

Cinnamon is one of the most common spices and food flavoring additives.. The National Library of Medicine states that "Cinnamon possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties" (Vasconcelos, 2018). During the last two decades, growing evidence shows that cinnamon is a strong antimicrobial agent that may act as antibacterial and antifungal system (Vasconcelos, 2018). The increased number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria calls for a new solution. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of cinnamon against two common bacterial strains, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Eschericihia Coli (E.coli) on an agar plate. This culminates in the question: does cinnamon have the antimicrobial properties to serve as an alternative treatment for drug resistant bacterial infections caused by E.coli and S. aureus?
